Sanjaya Malakar impressed Jennifer Lopez and Simon
Sanjaya Malakar has stirred up more controversy than any other contestant in American Idol history. Once again, the worst contestant on the show, who couldn’t sing if his life depended on it, managed to escape elimination. Even better, he kept himself out of the bottom three. What is going on with the American Idol voting phone lines?
Sanjaya’s rendition of “Besame Mucho” was probably his best performance to date, minus the facial hair and the way he batted his eyes to the camera. However, that doesn’t mean he is a good singer. Even JLo seemed charmed by Sanjaya in a disturbing way. Maybe it’s his resemblance to Marc Anthony. Lopez was “really impressed” and she thought Simon would be too.
Of course Simon Cowell gave Sanjaya one of his famous backhanded compliments, “I couldn’t understand a word of it. You sang like a 14 year-old. And I’m going to hate myself for saying this, it wasn’t horrible.”
During the elimination show, Ryan Seacreast played more games with Sanjaya before announcing his fate. Seacrest had Sanjaya stand three times before telling him he was safe. Instead, Chris Richardson was sent to he bottom three and the audience didn’t seem pleased. The crowd was booing. So this leaves the question, who is voting for Sanjaya Malakar?
It is very possible that people who don’t even watch American Idol or hate American Idol are voting for Sanjaya. It seems like campaigns like VoteForTheWorst.com and Howard Stern are having success. Howard Stern set up a system where his listeners are text messaged the number to call to vote for Sanjaya. The phone number also runs across the Sirius screen when it is available. Sanjaya is probably receiving millions of votes from American Idol haters.
Sanjaya knows he’s not the best contestant on the show, but he will ride this out as long as it last. And it will probably last a couple weeks longer. Online sportsbook, Bookmaker.com has odds at +475 that Sanjaya Malakar will be eliminated next week. Philip Joel Stacey is favored to be eliminated next Tuesday with odds at +100. I have a feeling Sanjaya will be stirring up controversy for plenty of weeks to come.
